3 Reasons Why You Should Wear Sunglasses
By Amber Dabrowski, NCEENT Optical Center Manager
Sunglasses are a stylish fashion accessory. At North Carolina Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Optical Centers we offer trendy sunglasses that protect your eyes. Below are three reasons why you should own a pair of proper fitting pair of sunglasses.
UV PROTECTION
The sun’s harmful rays can lead to serious, and in some cases, long term health issues. According to the American Optometric Association, the long term effects of UV ray exposure to the human eye can be linked to cataracts, macular degeneration and a number of eye diseases including skin cancer around the eyes. Sunglass lenses should offer at least UV 400 protection. Some of the $9.99 sunglasses will have a sticker offering 100% UV protection, but do not actually provide that level of protection.
SAFE DRIVING
Sunglasses help to cut glare from your windshield when driving. This is important when driving towards the sun during morning sunrise and afternoon sunset. Polarized lenses are a must as they are best at reducing glare.
HEALING & RECOVERY
If you’ve had LASIK, PRK or cataract surgery, your doctor will recommend that you wear sunglasses immediately after the procedure and that you continue wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes as they heal.
FINDING THE RIGHT FIT
Sunglasses provide the best protection when they fit properly. Sunglasses that are too loose, don’t conform to the face, or do not fit your nose correctly can cause unnecessary UV exposure to your eyes and skin around the eyes
